Alessandro Scarlatti's Tigrane

Libretto by Domenico Lalli

Stage Director Paige Whitley-Bauguess joins Music Director Stanley Ritchie in this production of Alessandro Scarlatti's masterpiece of opera seria from 1715, Tigrane. Featuring a large cast and chorus, period costumes, dance and gesture, and an ingenious tranformation of the Bsukirk-Chumley Theatre, this is BLEMF's most ambitious opera production to date and will be sure to please you.

Loosely based on Herodotus' story of Queen Thomyris' revenge on the Persian emperor Cyrus the Great, the story line satisfied the European taste for Classical themes, exotic locations, and tangled plot lines.

Scarlatti combines tuneful melodies with unusual instruments such as the viola d'amore, characters from the Comedia dell'arte tradition, and dances pirated from popular French operas to create the complete Baroque opera seria experience.
