Cecilia's Circle

Pious and Profane:
The Female Figure in Music 1600-1850

Cecilia's Circle is widely recognized for passionate, synergistic delivery and commitment to weaving their knowledge of women as musical agents into lively performance.

This program, revolving around musical characterization of women, offers portraits of heroines as well as the domestic world, the intimate arts of homelife, and musicianship cultivated within those boundaries, among mothers and children.

The program provides a view of early female composers Elisabeth Jacquet de La Guerre, Barbara Strozzi, Elizabeth Turner, and Faustina Hodges, all of whom were child prodigies leading very special musical lives within the protective constraints of their households and families.
