Reading and Playing Renaissance Music in French Tablature

David Rogers, guitarist

Guitarist and lutenist David Rogers will talk about applying period performance practices to transcriptions for the modern guitar. Specifically, David will cover the French tablature system, which is a great starting point for accessing new repertoire. David will then work with members of the Bloomington Guitar Society who have related pieces to perform. To sign up to work with David, please visit the Bloomington Guitar Society website.

illustration of French tablature

The French form of lute notation, adopted by English composers, was the most successful of all lute tablatures, and it eventually superseded the others (although not for guitar music).
